The Garden of the Gulf Museum, housed in a historic
sandstone building, officially opened on May 16, 1958. Located
on a hill overlooking the bridge, the museum is in the former
Post Office and Customs House. The brick and stone structure
was built in 1887 with stone quarried from the river and brick
that was made locally by Robert Stewart. The building is owned
by the Town of Montague and the museum operation is run by a
volunteer Board of Directors.

Over the entrances are unique stone carvings, a
bust of Queen Victoria and the Island Coat of Arms, with three
small trees under one large tree. The small trees represent our
three counties (Prince, Queens and Kings) and the large oak represents
Great Britain.
he museum, through temporary exhibits, interprets our rich local
history from prehistoric times to 1945. Each season a new display
is featured. Our collection consists of many special artifacts,
including a unique tunic made in Charlottetown before 1799 (worn
by Ian Mor MacDonald, a Militia volunteer during the 1790s),
an 1837 needlework sampler, and many man-made tools used by early settlers.
Also, various archival items are featured including bibles, deeds
and Provincial Auditor's Reports (1870s, 1880s, 1890s). The 1967
Centennial Album delights visitors with its seventy-page pictorial
history of Montague. It depicts the first bank safe arriving
in Montague, the first sidewalk being laid, the first horse racing
photo finish, and school pictures. This is a must-see display.
As well, the Museum regularly features thematic displays that change from year
to year. Past displays have included a sewing centre, medical equipment, farm
tools, etc. Please contact the Museum for a current display description. If you
are interested in researching the local area, the Museum is a wonderful resource
with a good collection of primary and secondary sources on a variety of local
topics. |
